Highlights of My Past Work

Systems Strategy

Systems Strategy

No technology solution lives on an island. Integrations and interconnections make up some of the most critical components in producing full functionality and reach project success goals.

In my work, I’ve led detailed, data-driven technology infrastructure and integration project planning, from budgeting to full-cycle implementation.

Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC)

TPAC
TPAC Interconnected Systems

In the heart of Nashville, TPAC consists of three performance venues and a concert venue that serve hundreds of thousands of audience members each year. With their dynamic and diverse slate of performances across all these locations, TPAC needed a technology solution that could keep their website and ticket buying process in sync seamlessly without adding a lot of extra effort to their already busy staff.

I led a team that not only redesigned their website including a complete content strategy, audit, and migration to a new platform, but also worked closely with TPAC to ensure that their normal, day-to-day internal operations could actually be used to fuel their public-facing content with minimal additional work. The custom-developed solution integrates with both their backend record keeping and their public ticketing system, so that all facets of managing performances and ensuring a great audience experience are handled efficiently.

My role:

I worked directly with TPAC’s technical team and vendors, and was the architect of their data connectivity solution tying their internal data source to their online presence. This included determining additional necessary fields and formats to support TPAC’s ongoing needs and to ensure continued functionality of the online portal in the event of a datastream interruption. I developed and wrote key content.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

AlexRenew

AlexRenew
AlexRenew Accounts

AlexRenew was not only in the midst of a complete brand overall, while at the same time their services were being broken out from Virginia American Water for the first time. Even though every single residential and commercial property in Alexandria, Virginia, had been paying for AlexRenew’s water treatment services, no one knew it because everything routed through VAW. Not only did I help develop an integrated marketing strategy with their print, ad, and social teams to get the word out, but I also architected and produced AlexRenew’s first ever online account management and payment system, working with a complex array of data providers and payment systems to help Alexandrians understand their usage and pay their bills easily.

My role:

I was the primary architect of AlexRenew’s account management features and payment systems integration, working directly with vendors on all sides to ensure a seamless process for account holders, including individuals with multiple properties in the city, which had not been done before (even offline).  I documented all integrations and, due to some staff turnover, served as institutional memory for many decisions made internally by AlexRenew for their integrated online services.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

National Association for Music Education (NAFME)

NAfME
NAfME Network Quarantine

NAFME had a crisis moment when several of their sites and servers had been hacked, and their internal IT department had just lost its last staff member. I  stepped in quickly to not only help clean up their sites and servers, but also to plan a new tech strategy that would help NAFME avoid problems like this in the future. I directed my team as we consolidated their wide range of narrowly focused solutions into a more manageable few, and provided guidance on how to easily work with the new tools.

Once things were in a better place, we worked with them to find a new AMS and switch vendors, integrating their new platforms without significant downtime.

My role:

I used my network and server experience to isolate NAFME’s hacked systems, scan them thoroughly, and determine the malicious code and its origins. From there, I developed a clean copy of necessary systems and launched them in a new server environment, allowing us to monitor for any signs of trouble and finalize a migration to clean instances. Once this was stabilized, I determined new AMS integration requirements and implemented those with their new vendor, which involved a complete overhaul of the SSO process.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

American Academy of Periodontology (AAP)

AAP
AAP Diagram

AAP trusted Bean Creative through multiple iterations of their website, even changing platforms to better suit their evolving needs. Via integrations with their AMS and community platform, AAP is able to deliver a seamless experience for their users, from consumers searching for a periodontist, to members accessing personal records, events, and more.

The solutions developed allowed AAP to have one coordinated integration between multiple systems, streamlining their overall technology profile and delivering their important messaging and content across these offerings in a manner that suited their staff and capabilities.

My role:

I performed a technology analysis to determine AAP’s new platform and its integrations, as well as architected the data solution between their AMS, website, publications system, and community platform.

I also programmed custom modules for enhanced functionality and integration between their systems and worked directly with their internal IT department on tech issues to handle time-sensitive issues within their server environment.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Web

Web Development

Almost every digital product or service is web connected, meaning that design and development for the web are some of the most crucial skills for tech leadership.

Verizon

As part of a broad marketing and messaging initiative to be known as much more than “just the phone company,” I spearheaded a team that delivered several high-profile websites to emphasize  Verizon’s innovative solutions as a technology trendsetter.

Breaking them out of departmental silos, we built a platform for corporate thought leadership as part of a holistic, 360 degree view of the organization.

Beginning with several disjointed sites — Verizon’s main company and Corporate Responsibility sites — I ensured my team implemented a strong visual hierarchy of information, centralized corporate voice and concise navigation to deliver both informational and influential messaging. I also led the effort that helped Verizon become the first major telecommunications company to issue a transparency report about law enforcement requests with the launch of transparency.verizon.com.

My role:

I collaborated closely with Verizon to determine a technology platform strategy and planned its implementation across multiple entities. I also served as a technology consultant related to expanding this consolidated solution to additional departments and business verticals. I developed and wrote key content.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA)

TIA had many irons in the fire, and needed a tech partner to come in, understand the diversity of their offerings, and make tangible contributions right from the beginning, all while they reinvented their brand. I helped them organize and publish web content across multiple streams, and promote a complex new initiative in order to get industry buy-in and acquire additional partners, resulting in new relationships and revenue opportunities.

At the same time, TIA was dealing with slow-responding vendors for their infrastructure, so I vetted new service providers to take a lot of the stress out of their daily lives related to uptime and ongoing unresolved problems.

My role:

I not only guided their platform overall and helped them secure and recreate a tech product from a departing partner, I also reviewed their server infrastructure and helped determine areas in need of improvement, then helped them secure new services to implement the improvements. In addition, TIA had several archaic systems in need of integration, but little additional budget. Because of the length and diversity of my experience, I was able to determine a reasonable solution and budget that did not require a full overhaul. I developed and wrote key content.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA)

ACI-NA needed a team able to help them reinvent their content structure and plan while providing them with seamless integrations into several third-party platforms, all while developing a major overall to their brand. I worked closely with ACI-NA to develop a content strategy and digital integrations plan that allowed their staff to easily manage all aspects of their online presence.

In addition, my team helped them expand their audience to include general consumers, letting ACI-NA tell the story of the critical role airports play in our lives. Because of the success of their primary site, my firm was tapped to extend this project to include ACI-NA’s partner division covering Canada.

My role:

I developed the plan for content analysis and selection, migration, and the entire data integration strategy and documentation of protocol. I also vetted and directed the implementation of full multilingual options for their Canada site, where both French and English are required.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Gunston Hall

Gunston Hall, the historic home of George Mason in Mason Neck, Virginia, was in the midst of both a brand overhaul and a major renovation of their physical space when my team was tapped to bring to life a massive update to their online presence.

Previous iterations of the Gunston Hall website provided a lot of information, but at the expense of navigation and ease of use for prospective visitors and other audience members. In collaboration with their internal rebranding committee, we streamlined the site’s structure by spending time with real visitors and determining what they wanted to find, and how they went about finding it. The result is a cleaner product, more focused on current events and how to enjoy Gunston Hall whether you’re a casual first timer or a repeat visitor keen on a deep dive into archeology and history.

My role:

I worked closely with their internal oversight board and members of their community and audience to develop a content plan and structure, and with their marketing team to determine a comprehensive branding plan. Then I cataloged content to decide how much would migrate to their new platform, and in what form. Because Gunston Hall had no IT staff or vendors, I vetted solutions and completely managed the transfer, setup, and infrastructure to provide them with a turnkey solution. I developed and wrote key content.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Mobile

Mobile Development

With so much of our time spent using mobile devices, it’s critical to ensure that every technical project looks carefully at how it will be utilized in the mobile space. Native apps, mobile web, and hybrid models that combine the two all have value, and each need must be assessed for audience requirements, functionality, timeline, and budget.

Super Why – Public Broadcasting System (PBS)

Working closely with PBS KIDS and Out of the Blue (SUPER WHY’s producers), I led a team that concepted and developed a connected game framework to highlight each character’s literary learning “super power.” The result is a rewarding, repeat-play game system with rewards that keep preschoolers engaged, delighted and motivated.

Within two weeks of launch, the original iPhone app entered iTunes’ top 10 bestseller list for PBS and remained there for over four years. PBS was so delighted with both the financial success and educational success of this app, they subsequently had us build additional versions for iPad, Android, Kindle, Nook, Google Play, and Windows Phone. At the initial release of the iPad, Steve Jobs featured the Super Why app behind him on stage at the launch event.

My role:

To lead my team by example, I concepted, designed, and programmed the entire iPhone app, and was responsible for app review and submission. When the initial app was successful, I was invited to Apple headquarters in California and worked directly with their staff to create a version for their (then) new iPad. Afterward, I documented all aspects of the programming and interface, and worked with my team of developers to make subsequent versions for Android, Windows, etc.  In addition, I developed and wrote key content.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW)

Embracing the fast-paced, mobile-first nature of both their industry and their location in New York City, CEW is always moving quickly. When I began their engagement to design and develop a completely new platform with first-time connections to their in-house data systems, one thing was clear: the show must go on. In CEW’s case, that meant an absolute deadline was to have everything planned, produced, and tested before it was time to launch CEW’s annual beauty awards, a major industry event that requires months of lead-in work for nominations, review, and selection. Despite the limited time, I ensured my team worked closely with CEW and their data systems vendor to plan and develop the entire system and launch it without a hitch. On top of this, CEW’s executive review team was, of course, heavily focused on every detail of the visual interface, and my designers worked tirelessly to make sure everything was just the way CEW wanted to display their brand.

My role:

I worked directly with CEW’s data providers to determine and scope all the necessary touchpoints and streams to get CEW’s ever-changing events and awards information delivered to their very active membership base. In addition, I led a strategic planning team that documented maintenance procedures and provided hands-on instruction for CEW staff to allow them to keep everything running as expected and ahead of deadlines.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Digital Products

Digital Products

In additional to systems, web, and mobile work, my experience includes the development of digital products critical to the mission of organizations. In working on these projects, my goal is always to assess the criteria for success and the audiences to serve, so that the correct team members can be assembled to carry out the complicated and interconnected parts that make up the entire digital product.

My Case Maker

My firm developed and pitched an idea for middle school civics education to the Library of Congress, and was awarded a highly prestigious grant to produce and maintain the project. Using a series of narrative ‘challenges,’ My Case Maker asks students to review real primary sources from US history and determine their own viewpoint on important civics topics, then make their case with evidence taken from the primary sources.

The custom system developed allows students to take entire primary sources or portions of them (via cropping, clipping, and page limiting) to create a customized slideshow of their case that can be easily presented in a classroom setting or delivered to a teacher for review via a special URL.

In addition, because many middle schoolers are under age 13 and subject to COPPA privacy rules, a specialized system was developed where teachers could assign a challenge to their students, and each student could manage their own case – over multiple sessions and from different computers – via a special code only they know, and without collecting any private information. Teachers also have the option of creating their own custom challenges just for their students.

My role:

I developed the core concept for the grant proposal, helped write the grant, created the project specification once the grant was awarded, and fully architected the solution for challenges, cases, user accounts, customization, and the proprietary code system for use with students.  I developed and wrote key content.

In addition, due to my intimate familiarity with all the details of the project, I wrote the scripts for the video tutorials directed at both students and teachers.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Ranger Rick – National Wildlife Federation (NWF)

Though Ranger Rick has been a favorite of kids for generations, changing times presented challenges for the National Wildlife Federation’s suite of magazines and their digital companions. With a need to change how they fulfill subscriptions and a desire to produce something easily extensible to their three related age groups (Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick Jr, and Ranger Rick Cub), I led a team that worked with NWF to develop a plan to help keeps costs under control while shifting from their previous platform that was very hard for them to maintain and expand. We also worked with them to integrate their first online subscription model, including methods to allow NWF to specify what items remained free for all, and what content would go behind their new paywall. I even solved an ongoing problem regarding image rights by integrating tools to allow NWF to replace print images from the magazine with comparable new imagery specifically permitted for online use.

My role:

I worked closely with NWF management to develop a plan that would meet their content, integration, design, and budgetary needs, including Ranger Rick’s first ever paywall which allowed them to publish all magazine content online without undercutting their print subscriptions business. I also programmed solutions that allowed for legacy content to have new uses and diversity in usage and presentation, which streamlined their staff’s ability to produce content with rich interconnections. I developed and wrote key content.

For the entirety of the engagement, I served as the primary client and third-party vendor liaison, and the chief of our internal group of designers, developers, programmers, and project managers.

Team Leadership

Team Leader

I’ve led diverse technical and design teams ranging in size from two to more than thirty, with skill sets including designers, programmers, database developers, systems engineers, production staff, writers, artists, subject matter experts, and project managers. My teams have been in-house, fully remote, or a hybrid of both, and in many cases, included people from an array of time zones.

Mentoring

Staff Memtor

In my career, I’m grateful to have worked with great team members, a number of whom I hired directly out of college or very early in their careers.

I believe that the best experiences – and the best results – come from people invested in their work and the future of the organization, and who know the organization is invested in their future, as well.

I’m proud to say that these people used the technical and soft skills they gained, honed, and expanded during our time together to continue their successful careers at organizations such as Meta (Facebook), Deloitte, GrubHub, Trip Advisor, Booz Allen, and other great companies.
